The simulations were performed using an initial speed of 55 mph (the driver had stated he was traveling at the posted speed limit, 55 mph). The SIMON simulations immediately showed the vehicle going into a broad slide when it hit the water patch, leaving the road on the left shoulder and losing control as the driver attempted to return to the road. A second SIMON simulation was performed after making a single change: The tread depth was increased to 0.5 inches (i.e., new tires). The vehicle tracked through the turn and did not lose control. A third simulation using tires with a 6/32 inch tread depth revealed minimal hydroplaning at the front and no hydroplaning at the rear.
