A series of SIMON simulations revealed the vehicles were traveling near the posted speed limit of 55 mph. The Peterbilt was in the oncoming lane when it first became visible to the driver of the Ford. Both drivers steered to avoid impact; the driver of the Ford also braked. A sideswipe collision occurred between the left side Peterbilt drive wheels and the left quarterpanel/wheel of the Ford. The collision forces and accelerations were not severe, but were large enough to cause the Ford to lose control and spin counter-clockwise off the road.
