HVE Automatic Transmission Model

The HVE Automatic Transmission Model shifts the vehicle's transmission during a simulation, just like a real transmission. The model is especially useful whenever the vehicle's powertrain capabilities and driver control inputs are an issue. For example, on an uphill stretch of two-lane highway, the driver of a passenger car wanted to pass a Mack truck tractor towing a loaded semi-trailer at a speed of only 30 mph. If the driver of the car applies 90% WOT at the start of the passing maneuver, what distance is required to safely pass the truck-trailer and what speed will the car have accelerated to as it returns to the original lane of travel? Answer: The car started out in 2nd gear at 2660 RPM, but applying 90% WOT at the start of the maneuver immediately caused a shift down to 1st gear. The vehicle accelerated to 34 mph before shifting back into 2nd gear, and then to 58 mph before shifting into 3rd gear. After traveling a distance of 605 ft and reaching a speed of 62 mph, the car was at a safe distance in front of the truck to return to the original lane of travel. Transmission Data dialog in the HVE Vehicle Editor

The Transmission Data dialog in the HVE Vehicle Editor displays the gear ratios of the transmission, and also a Type selector for Manual or Automatic. If set to Automatic, SIMON determines the correct gear at the start of the simulation according to initial velocity, then shifts the transmission according to engine speed and throttle position.
